Bam Aquino hopes influencers tell TikTok generation about EDSA Revolution

Bam Aquino EDSA Revolution influencers Tiktok generation

Former Senator Benigno Paolo "Bam" Aquino IV has asked some artists and influencers to help spread the message of the EDSA Revolution to what he called the "TikTok generation."

Bam Aquino, who's eyeing a return to the Senate, took the group on a guided tour of the Aquino Center and Museum in Tarlac City on Tuesday, the 39th anniversary of People Power.

“Bilang nakababatang pinsan ni dating Pangulong Noynoy, at pamangkin nina Ninoy at Cory, minarapat kong ipagpatuloy ang kuwento ng sakripisyong ginawa nila para sa bayan, lalo na para sa TikTok generation,” Bam Aquino said.

(As a cousin of former President Noy and a nephew to Ninoy and Cory, I decided to tell their story of sacrifice for the country, especially among the TikTok generation.)

“Mahalagang malaman ng kasalukuyang henerasyon ang isang katotohanan ng ating kasaysayan—walang kayang humadlang sa isang nagkaisang sambayanan,” he added.

Among those who joined the guided tour were Andrei Hermida, Enzo Bonoan, Adrian Araneta, Lexi Mercader, Andrea Guevarra, Zion Licup, Lean Ansing, Jose Siscar, Marion Redoblado, Julia Pineda, Justin Dizon, Joey Concepcion, Patty Bau, Rose, JP Reyes, Zion Aguirre, Niño San Juan, Renz Saavedra, Saerick Macasaquit, Tayn Castillo, Pinky Amador, Viktoria Agbayani, Chef Gelo Guison, Chef Jeng Flores, Ferdi Flores, Joan, Dei, Bayang Barrios, Morobeats, DJ Med, Malik, Jmara, TJ, Dizzy D, Tofu, Naus, and Prophecee.

“Through the help of these online influencers and artists, we hope that the spirit and lessons of EDSA can be passed onto future generations, keeping its memory alive and inspiring more Filipinos to value freedom and democracy,” Bam Aquino said.

His uncle, former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., was the leader of the opposition during the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. He was assassinated at the airport on Aug. 21, 1983.

Ninoy Aquino's widow, Corazon "Cory" Aquino, became president after the EDSA Revolution which culminated on Feb 25, 1986. She died in 2009.

Their son, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, was elected president in 2010.

Former Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said the EDSA Revolution remained relevant.

“Ito ay tungkol sa pagbawi ng ating dignidad, ating mga karapatan, at ating kalayaan na hubugin ang kinabukasan ng ating bansa,” said Pangilinan, a student leader in 1986 and who's also running to return to the Senate.

(It is about taking back our dignity, our rights, and our freedom to shape the future of our country.)

“Hanggang ngayon, patuloy ang laban—hindi lamang para sa demokrasya, kundi para sa isang mas matinding bagay: kalayaan mula sa gutom,” Pangilinan added.

(The fight goes on, not only for democracy but also for freedom from hunger.)

Pangilinan also lauded the schools that suspended classes on Tuesday to commemorate EDSA.

“Our People Power inspired countries like Poland, South Korea, South Africa, even the Soviet Union...we inspired their societies’ and the organizations’ and groups’ desire for democracy. The world looked up to us then," Pangilinan said.

"While many of the hopes and aspirations of our people after People Power were not met. And that’s a challenge for this generation of leaders to work," he added. –NB, GMA Integrated News
