DOTr considers extending MRT, LRT operating hours
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is exploring the possibility of extending the operating hours of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) following the appointment of Secretary Vivencio "Vince" Dizon.
In a 24 Oras report by Joseph Morong on Tuesday, some commuters expressed concerns about the 10 p.m. last trip, particularly those working late at night.
Dizon acknowledged the challenges of commuting, calling it a “painful experience” but stopped short of labeling it as “horrible”, especially for those who have already secured a ride on a bus.
During his ride on the EDSA Bus Carousel, Dizon identified several issues:
- Poor integration between the EDSA Bus Carousel and MRT at some stations
- Inconsistent waiting times for buses
To address these, the DOTr is considering implementing a 45-second stop duration for buses to pick up and drop off passengers.
The department was also looking into creating a dedicated concourse and clearer signage for passengers transferring between the EDSA Bus Carousel and MRT
Furthermore, Dizon reminded motorists that using the EDSA Busway was illegal.
Meanwhile, the DOTr plans to meet with toll operators to discuss the implementation of a cashless toll collection system to streamline operations.
He also assured the public that steps would be taken to prevent traffic congestion in Valenzuela, caused by failed RFID readers, from happening again. — Mariel Celine Serquiña, GMA Integrated News
