PNP: 40 kidnapping cases recorded since January 2024

A total of 40 kidnapping cases, linked to disputes in underground gambling and cyber fraud, have been recorded since January 2024 in the country, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

“From January 2024 to February 2025, the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) recorded a total of 40 kidnapping cases, 10 of which involved Chinese nationals as victims, all reportedly abducted by fellow Chinese perpetrators,” the PNP said in a statement Monday evening.

“These incidents highlight the continuing challenges posed by criminal syndicates operating in the aftermath of the [Philippine offshore gaming operators] shutdown,” it added.

According to the PNP, recent investigations showed that some crimes including kidnappings stem from disputes in underground gambling and cyber fraud, which are usually linked to former POGO operations.

The most recent incident is the disappearance of a foreign national in Metro Manila who was last seen on February 20.

Authorities are pursuing multiple leads but all angles are being investigated, according to the PNP.

PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil advised the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident that could cause unnecessary alarm.

Those with relevant information in the case are encouraged to help the probe.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation and urge everyone to rely on official reports. The PNP is committed to following all leads to uncover the truth,” Marbil said.

“The PNP will remain relentless in its efforts to curb criminal activities and dismantle networks that pose threats to peace and order. We are fully committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable,” he added. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
