At the  People Power Monument in Quezon City, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) led the wreath-laying and flag-raising ceremonies at 8 a.m. More activities will be held at 9 a.m.

NHCP senior history researcher Kristoffer Pasion said the Human Rights Violation Victims' Memorial Commission will conduct a program for the event.

“Sa ngayon mas simple 'yung paggunita natin sa ika-39 na anibersaryo ng EDSA (Our commemoration of the 39th anniversary of EDSA revolution is more simple this year),” Pasion told GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita in an interview.

In a separate interview, Rector of Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace Fr. Jerome Secillano said their activities would focus on the faith component of the EDSA revolution.

“Madalas nakikita po natin 'yung mga wreath-laying, participation ng mga politiko pero nais naman namin dito sa National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace 'yung faith component,” he said.

(We often see wreath-laying ceremonies and participation of politicians but we want to emphasize the faith component here at the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace.)

“Dito sa National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace ang gagawin namin ngayon mga liturgical, sacramental activities katulad ng pagdiriwang ng Banal na Misa,” he added.

(Here at the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, we will do liturgical, sacramental activities like the celebration of the Holy Mass.)

According to him, the intervention of the Virgin Mary contributed to the peaceful revolution.

“Ayon nga kay Cardinal Jaime Sin ay meron talagang intervention ng Mahal na Birhen. Napakahalaga ng intervention ng Mahal na Birhen kung kaya nagkaroon tayo ng mapayapa at matagumpay na EDSA revolution,” he added.

(As Cardinal Jaime Sin has said, there really is an intervention of the Virgin Mary. The intervention of the Virgin Mary was very important, that's why we had a peaceful and successful EDSA revolution.)

Priests and bishops will be invited to these activities, according to Secillano.

The EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary was declared a special working day this year, falling on a Tuesday. Several schools have announced suspension of classes to commemorate the occasion.
