Makabayan Senate bets campaign in Mindanao communities

Several senatorial candidates from the Makabayan coalition campaigned in Mindanao, engaging with residents in poor communities across various cities.

“We received a warm reception from the people in markets, urban poor communities and places of work. The reason is that Makabayan candidates fight for the basic issues of the people,” the coalition said in a joint statement on Friday.

ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro and Amirah Lidasan launched the coalition's Mindanao campaign in Cotabato City on Thursday.

Lidasan later joined fellow Makabayan candidates—Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas, Liza Maza, Teddy Casiño, Jerome Adonis, and Alyn Andamo—in Davao City on Friday.

The candidates went on house-to-house visits, met with fisherfolk, spoke with jeepney drivers at terminals, and engaged with students in universities across Davao.

“We were warmly received by communities under threat of demolition because they know where Makabayan stands in relation to the right to housing," the coalition stated.

"In public markets, we were warmly received by the people because they know Makabayan has been fighting the rising prices of basic goods as well as fighting for a living wage for workers.”

In addition to their domestic campaign efforts, three Makabayan candidates recently traveled to Hong Kong to engage with overseas Filipino workers.

The coalition also announced plans for activities on Tuesday, February 25, in commemoration of the EDSA People Power anniversary. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
