Japan celebrates National Day amid strengthened ties with the Philippines

In a vibrant celebration of Japan's National Day, which coincides with the birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, esteemed dignitaries gathered to commemorate this significant occasion at a traditional event held in the Philippines.

The festivities featured a traditional Japanese dance, showcasing colorful kimono-clad performers. Among those in attendance were Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuya Endo, Senate President Chiz Escudero, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who shared a toast ("kanpai") to mark the occasion.

Both Japan and the Philippines highlighted the historical importance of this year’s National Day, especially as upcoming weeks will demonstrate the implications of the recently signed Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA). This agreement enhances cooperation between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Japan's Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), allowing for joint military exercises beyond the previous scope of maritime cooperative activities.

Ambassador Endo expressed optimism about the future of Japan-Philippines relations, stating, “As we expect another high-level visit to Manila before long, Japan-Philippines security ties are expected to be further strengthened.”

Earlier this January, Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya emphasized Japan's support for the Philippines in its territorial rights in the West Philippine Sea, stating that they oppose any attempts to disrupt the current situation in that area.

The Department of Foreign Affairs summarized the significance of the years 2024 and 2025 for both nations, not only due to the RAA but also in light of successful trilateral maritime dialogues involving the Philippines, Japan, and the United States. This cooperative relationship is expected to continue under the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Usec. Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega of the DFA remarked on the ongoing commitments between the countries: “Further underscores our commitments to collaborative efforts in maintaining regional stability. These achievements paved the way for even greater strength, resilience, and mutual support as we navigate the challenges of the future.”

The celebration of Japan’s National Day was attended by various high-ranking government officials, including AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., lawmakers, ambassadors from different countries, and notable media personalities such as Saksi and 24 Oras Weekend anchor Pia Arcangel and Assistant Vice President and Deputy Head of Operations of GMA Integrated News Queenie Santos Dimapawi. — BM, GMA Integrated News
