BuCor orders close monitoring of PDLs, staff amid rising dengue cases

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. ordered Thursday the close monitoring of persons deprived of liberty (PDL) and personnel amid rising dengue cases.

According to BuCor, Catapang tasked chiefs of health service from various facilities to monitor any signs of dengue, implement preventive actions, and ensure that confirmed cases are reported to local authorities within 24 hours.

“The recent surge in dengue cases underscores the importance of implementing preventive measures to minimize the potential for disease transmission within our facilities and workspaces,” he said in a statement.

Catapang approved the recommendation of Chief Superintendent and OIC-Deputy Director General for Reformation and Director for Health and Welfare Services Ma Cecilia Villanueva, the bureau said.

Over the weekend, Quezon City declared a dengue outbreak amid a rise  in cases and at least 10 deaths due to the virus. Among the fatalities, eight were minors.

On Monday, the Department of Health said that eight more areas in the country may announce a dengue outbreak soon.

From January 1 to February 14, 2025, the QC City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division recorded a total of 1,769 cases in the city—nearly 200% higher than last year. — Joahna Lei Casilao/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
