UP Cebu, St. Scholastica-Pampanga, Saint Louis schools suspend classes, work on Feb. 25 to observe EDSA People Power anniversary

Three more academic institutions have announced a suspension of classes and work on February 25, 2025 to fully commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

In a Facebook post, the St. Scholastica’s Academy in Pampanga said it "unites" with Catholic schools in the country in remembering the EDSA uprising.

“It shall be a day of remembering the voice of the people in fighting against authoritarian regime," the school said.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu will also call off classes and work on February 25, which it called "a day of commemoration, remembrance and reflection," according to Tug-ani, the university's official student publication.

"This day serves as an opportunity for the UP Cebu community to pause, reflect, and honor the significance of the EDSA People Power Revolution," the publication said quoting a memorandum issued by Chancellor Leo Malgar.

UP Cebu said it "encourages students, faculty, and staff to engage in discussions, fora, activities, promoting historical awareness and democratic engagement."

The Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae-Philippines Schools Network (CICM-PSN) declared February 25 as a special non-working day in its schools nationwide, and classes at all levels are suspended.

CICM-PSN consists of the Maryhill School of Theology, Saint Louis College-Cebu, Saint Louis College-San Fernando City, Saint Louis University, Saint Mary's University, and the University of Saint Louis.

"The CICM-PSN reiterates this commitment by ensuring that significant, historical milestones remain indelibly etched in the nation’s narrative. This is not only to recognize the people who sacrificed themselves during those events, but to also ensure that our learners of today have a genuine knowledge and understanding of our history in order to know where we truly stand today," the network said.

It added that the EDSA People Power Revolution "is a historical breakthrough for the Philippines," adding that its essence "should always be recognized, felt and observed."

Earlier, several schools have also announced class suspension on February 25, including the University of Sto. Tomas and  members of the EDSA Ortigas Consortium of Schools (EDSOR Consortium) namely, the Immaculate Conception Academy, La Salle Greenhills, Saint Pedro Poveda College, and Xavier School.

In a separate statement, De La Salle Philippines said all of its schools will also suspend classes and work on February 25.
