Gabriela's Brosas calls out Jimmy Bondoc for alleged sexist remark in TV interview

Gabriela party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas on Monday called out her fellow senatorial candidate Jimmy Bondoc over his remark about not wanting to argue with a news anchor because she was pretty.

Brosas was referring to Bondoc's television interview in which he discussed Pastor Apollo Quiboloy's detention.

"Kapag ang isang kandidato sa pagka-senador ay hindi kayang magbigay ng respeto sa kababaihan, hindi siya karapat-dapat maglingkod sa bayan," Brosas said.

"Panahon na para magkaroon tayo ng mas mataas na pamantayan sa pagiging lider, at isa dito ang pagpapakita ng respeto at pagpapahalaga sa kababaihan at mga bata. We demand a public apology from Jimmy Bondoc,” she added.

(A Senate bet who does not respect women does not deserve to be a public servant. It is about time that we raise the standards of being a leader, and these include showing respect and recognizing the worth of women and children.)

"Bondoc's sexist behavior comes as no surprise since he hails from Duterte's party, which is notorious for its misogyny and degrading treatment of women," Brosas said.

"Kapag naiipit sa usapan, idinadaan sa sexist na biro para makalusot at gawing katawa-tawa ang seryosong pagtatanong ng media. Hindi ito dapat palampasin,” she added.

(Since he was cornered, he tried to wiggle his way out by making a sexist joke and ridiculing a serious question. We should not let him get away with this.)

Bondoc is running under the PDP Laban party of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

GMA News Online has reached out to PDP-Laban and Bondoc for comment and will publish it as soon as it becomes available.

Brosas was referring to the interview in which TV 5's Gretchen Ho asked Bondoc about his statement that detained religious leader Quiboloy was the face of injustice in the Philippines.

She said the filing of cases against the suspects was part of due process and served justice for both the accused and victims.

Bondoc answered, “To quickly settle the issue... Ayaw kitang kaaway, masyado kang maganda eh... (I don't want to fight with you because you're too beautiful).

"Let the courts decide. Although I hope they will set bail soon because bailable naman 'yung most of the cases na na-file against him," said Bondoc, a lawyer. –NB, GMA Integrated News
