BI warns vs online love scam targeting Pinoys

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) issued a warning on Valentine's Day, Friday, against a new love scam targeting Filipinos online.

In a news release, the BI said it received reports of Filipinos deceived by unscrupulous individuals posing as foreigners who developed online romantic relationships with their victims.

After promising to visit the Philippines, the suspects allegedly pretend to be held back at the airport for carrying large sums of cash or expensive gifts, such as an engagement ring.

A fake immigration officer then contacts the victim, demanding money to secure the foreigner's release.

"These scammers fabricate stories to make their victims believe they are in trouble and need immediate financial assistance," said BI Commissioner Joel Viado.

"We remind the public that the BI does not demand payments over the phone, nor are we responsible for handling incoming currency or personal belongings such as luggage or jewelry," he said.

In August, the BI said one victim was tricked into paying P70,000 for the alleged release of her foreign fiancé. Other victims were likewise scammed into paying for the supposed release of their partners.

"Scammers prey on emotions to manipulate their victims. We strongly advise against sending money to anyone without verifying their claims through official channels," said Viado.

Authorities have repeatedly advised the public against love scams. In January, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said it is expecting the number of Filipino love scam victims to rise in February this year, adding that up to 15 Filipinos a day fall victim to online love scams during the "month of love." — VDV, GMA Integrated News
