BOC: Over P85-B goods seized in 2,100 anti-smuggling ops in 2024

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has ramped up its anti-smuggling and illegal trade operations in line with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s directive to safeguard national security and economic stability, the agency said in a statement Wednesday.

The bureau said it intensified its enforcement actions last year to protect the country's borders, recognizing that smuggling not only undermines government revenues but also threatens local industries, public safety, and food security.

With this, the BOC said it has conducted over 2,100 successful anti-smuggling operations, which led to the seizure of goods worth P85.167 billion in 2024.

The BOC said its enforcement actions targeted various illicit items, including counterfeit products, illegal drugs, smuggled tobacco and vape goods, and agricultural products that pose risks to farmers and consumers alike.

Moreover, the agency said the continuous enforcement of the Fuel Marking Program ensured that nearly 20 billion liters of fuel were marked, equivalent to a 5% increase from the previous year.

Under the program, refined, manufactured, or imported gasoline, diesel, and kerosene in the Philippines are marked after their corresponding taxes and duties have been paid.

The BOC said the program has generated over P242 billion in tax revenue while curbing fuel smuggling that distorts fair market competition.

To reinforce compliance, the bureau said it has also revoked the accreditations of 56 importers and customs brokers found violating customs regulations.

It added that 45 criminal cases were filed against those involved in smuggling, demonstrating the agency's zero-tolerance policy toward illicit trade.

"Smuggling is not just an economic issue—it is a national security concern that affects every Filipino. Under President Marcos' directive, we are intensifying our crackdown on illicit trade to protect local industries, ensure food security, and promote a level playing field for businesses," said Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio.

"By leveraging intelligence, enforcement, and inter-agency collaboration, the BOC remains steadfast in its mission to secure our borders and uphold economic stability," said Rubio.

With its aggressive measures, the BOC said it continues to uphold its mandate of protecting the country's borders, ensuring fair trade, and fostering national development.

Last Friday, the President lauded the gains made by the BOC despite the controversies and allegations of corruption that tainted the agency's name in the past.

"I shall be direct: Throughout its 123-year history, the Bureau of Customs has never had an easy time. Various controversies and corruption allegations have eroded the public trust," said Marcos in his speech during the BOC's 123rd founding anniversary ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

"But we are changing that, we will allow your accomplishments to speak for themselves," he added. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
