Gov’t to upgrade 15 airports nationwide - Marcos

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Thursday that 15 airports nationwide will soon undergo upgrades under the government’s Aviation Infrastructure Program.

Marcos said that P7.7 billion was allocated for the modernization of facilities of various airports in the country.

“This underscores our resolve to modernize facilities and ensure connectivity across the archipelago,” he said during the inauguration of the alternate runway at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

“Through this program, we can construct, rehabilitate, and enhance runways, taxiways, ramps, and control towers, while at the same time acquiring state-of-the-art navigational equipment.”

Marcos said the new runway at MCIA is the first and only parallel runway in the Philippines. He added that this is expected to boost the airport’s competitiveness and connectivity to take more visitors.

“With two runways running full-time, the airport will now have the capacity, the capability to cater to up to 18 million passengers a year,” he said.

“It’s only a snapshot of all the exciting things that are happening in our airport infrastructure.”

Marcos said the MCIA catered to 8.5 million domestic passengers and 2.8 million international passengers in 2024.

“By 2028, we expect the alternate—the parallel runway—to be used simultaneously together with the original runway, ensuring greater efficiency and capacity to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving and growing aviation industry,” the president added. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
