Outgoing ADB chief pays farewell call on Marcos

Outgoing Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Asakawa Masatsugu on Thursday paid a farewell call on President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr.
The farewell call took place at the Study Room in Malacañang Palace, Manila.
Marcos said Asakawa's stay in the Philippines was important and productive as well as literally constructive. He even cited ADB's critical role, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I have to always thank you for the involvement of ADB. The partnership of ADB and the Philippines has certainly grown to a great deal,” Marcos said.
“Of particular note, it was the support of ADB during the pandemic. That was critical. That was absolutely critical for our recovery. Without your help it would have been a much more difficult situation for us,” he added.
The President also intends to increase the government's engagement with the ADB.
“We fully intend to increase that engagements and continue to make them stronger. Again, thank you for all the help,” he said.
Meanwhile, Marcos conferred upon Asakawa the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Datu (Grand Cross) Gold Distinction. The said award was given in recognition of his significant efforts to deepen the partnership and overall relations between the Philippines and ADB.
The ADB Board of Governors had unanimously elected Masato Kanda as ADB’s 11th President. Kanda, 59, served as Special Advisor to Japan’s Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
The ADB has since vowed to work closely with the Marcos administration when it comes to infrastructure projects.
