DepEd working with experts, communities to ensure 'culturally sensitive' programs

DepEd ensured that its measures respond to the needs of the students that are culturally sensitive amid concerns about the CSE.

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday ensured that its measures respond to the needs of the students that are "culturally sensitive" amid concerns about the implementation of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

DepEd made the statement after the National Coalition for the Family and the Constitution (NCFC) expressed concern over the possible discussion of concepts like "gender fluidity" and "sexual diversity," contraception, abortion, and non-traditional relationships under the CSE.

The group said those topics contradict traditional Christian and Islamic morality on family life.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, however, maintained that the agency listens to the sentiments of the public as regards their measures, noting that the agency is open to suggestions in relation to their efforts.

''We are actively collaborating with various stakeholders, including health service providers and community organizations, to ensure that our programs are effective and culturally sensitive. Our efforts include exploring models from our communities and other countries,'' Angara said.

"Sinisiguro ng Kagawaran na ang aming mga hakbang ay tumutugon sa pangangailangan ng ating mga mag-aaral, lalo na kung paano sila makitungo sa kanilang sarili at sa isa't isa," added Angara.

(The Department ensures that our efforts respond to the needs of the students and how they relate with themselves and with other people.)

Angara also recalled that during his time at the Senate, he took proactive steps in order to address the alarming rise in the number of cases of teenage pregnancy.

''We filed a resolution aimed at adopting a whole-of-government approach to develop a comprehensive policy framework. This framework seeks to prevent early childbearing and mitigate its negative consequences, such as school dropouts, and ensure the welfare and future of our youth."
