AFP to conduct background checks on Eleksyon 2025 bets
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said on Thursday that it would conduct thorough background checks on candidates in the May 12 polls.
“This initiative is conducted in coordination with the Comelec and PNP and focuses on identifying potential security threats arising from foreign interference and malign influence,” the AFP said in a statement.
“Any findings will be confidentially relayed to the Comelec for appropriate action,” it added.
The AFP said that the intelligence gathering would be fair.
“The AFP’s role is strictly nonpartisan. Our efforts are anchored on impartiality and respect for the democratic process,” the military said.
The Commission on Elections earlier reiterated that aspirants with cases declared final and executory by the en banc were excluded from the ballot. But those with pending decisions will still be included. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/VBL, GMA Integrated News
