PAF mourns death of airman-athlete Mervin Guarte

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and airman Mervin Guarte.

In a statement, the PAF said it deeply mourns the passing of Guarte, an Airman First Class (A1C), whom the institution cited as an accomplished soldier athlete who joined the PAF through direct enlistment in 2015 and was assigned to Lipa, Batangas.

"His discipline, dedication, and commitment to excellence made him an exemplary serviceman and an accomplished athlete, bringing honor and pride to the country and the PAF in numerous international and national competitions," PAF said.

"The Philippine Air Force condoles with A1C Guarte's family and assures full support and assistance as they cope with this untimely loss," it added.

On Tuesday morning, Guarte was killed by stabbing in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

PAF said it fully cooperates with the Calapan City Police in its ongoing investigation into the incident.

The Oriental Mindoro Provincial Police Office reported that the 32-year-old athlete was sleeping in the house of a barangay councilman when the incident occurred.

Guarte was still able to call for help and was brought to the hospital, but eventually passed away.

The Philippine Sports Commission expressed condolences, while the Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation condemned the incident and called for justice.

Guarte won gold during the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia in 2023, helping the four-man team capture the title in the men's team relay of the obstacle course racing (OCR).

He also copped a gold medal in the 2019 SEA Games after reigning supreme in the men's 5km of OCR. Guarte is also a holder of two silver medals in the 2011 edition, placing second in both the 800m and 1500m track events.

Guarte was part of the national record holder of the 4x800m relay team, which tallied 7:42.20 during the Vietnam Open in July 2014.—Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA Integrated News
