AFP remains united despite 'political intrigue' in NSC reshuffle —Spox

AFP said unity and professionalism are still observed among the military despite the supposed political intrigue in the NSC's reorganization.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday said unity and professionalism are still observed among the military despite the supposed “political intrigue” after the reorganization of the National Security Council (NSC).

Padilla called “political intrigue” the allegation that the NSC reorganization indicates a power struggle between the country’s “dominant political dynasties” ahead of the midterm elections.

“In terms of whether there's a rift, this is a classic case of political intrigue. This narrative holds no water. And what we can say is that the security sector is united under the umbrella of the chain of command,” AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla said in a press briefing.

“We maintain that the Armed Forces of the Philippines is united. We are professional. We are loyal to the Constitution and to the flag. And we adhere to the chain of command,” she added.

“So anything po that are rumors that other players are saying about this that is contrary to us being united, these are perpetrated by outside players who just want to seek headlines,” she added.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya also refuted such allegations. He asserted the unwavering support of the national security establishment for the country’s leadership and chain of command.

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. reorganized the NSC. His order removed Vice President Sara Duterte and former presidents from the council’s composition.

In signing Executive Order No. 81, Marcos said there is a need to further guarantee that NSC remains a resilient national security institution, capable of adapting to evolving challenges and opportunities both here and abroad, and to ensure that NSC members “uphold and protect national security and sovereignty, thereby fostering an environment conducive to effective governance and stability.”
