LTO: Nearly 1K driver’s licenses revoked in 2024

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) cancelled a total of 984 driver’s licenses last year for various offenses, many of them due to violations of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the revoked licenses included those from errant motorists who appeared in videos that went viral on social media that were either reported by concerned individuals to the LTO or monitored by the agency itself.

“We have a total of 984 driver’s licenses revoked in 2024. Lahat po ito ay dumaan sa tamang proseso ng due process,” Mendoza said in a statement on Sunday.

(All of this underwent the proper due process.)

The move, Mendoza said, “is part of our aggressive campaign to impose discipline and for responsible driving as part of the road safety advocacy of our DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista.”

Based on LTO’s data, 736 driver’s licenses were canceled for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10586 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013, which includes driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs/substance, and refusal to subject oneself to mandatory alcohol test during a vehicular accident.

Meanwhile, 130 licenses were revoked for violation of RA 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, particularly obtaining licenses in a questionable way.

There were 94 licenses also revoked for violation of RA 10930, the act that extended the validity of driver’s license and penalizes acts in violation of its issuance and application. Some of the violations under this law included having double licenses, falsification of documents, and cheating during examinations.

Twenty-four licenses were also revoked over viral videos on social media and other complaints lodged before the LTO central office.

“We hope that this year, there will be no minimal or even zero administrative cases with driver’s license revocation as a penalty because we in the LTO want all our motorists to be responsible and disciplined while using our roads,” Mendoza said.

“But let this also serve as a warning that your LTO will not hesitate to suspend and revoke as many driver’s licenses if it would lead to the safety of all road users. Always remember that the driver's license we issue is a privilege, kaya magtulungan po tayo [let’s help one another],” he added.

Earlier, the LTO said they were able to apprehend 639,323 motorists for committing various types of traffic violations for 2024.

Most of the motorists were apprehended in Calabarzon with over 109,159 motorists or about 144.11% more than those apprehended in 2023. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
