Cardinal David calls out Facebook for failing to remove fake pages used for scams

Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David on Thursday slammed Facebook (FB) over its failure to remove fake pages being used for scams.

David said that a certain processed milk product seller already created countless fake Facebook accounts using the names of himself, Cardinal Chito Tagle, Cardinal Joe Advincula, Cardinal Orlando Quevedo, Department of Health (DOH) officials, Dr. Eric Tayag, and the DOH itself.

He said these fake accounts remain online despite "thousands of reports" to Meta which operates Facebook.

"I created a post providing a link to the fake account while warning people about it as a scam. The reaction of FB? Its AI-controlled system took down my post and warned me that my posting “violated their rules,”" Cardinal David said in a statement on his account.

"It means FB rules are favorable to these cyber crime syndicates. I wouldn’t be surprised if they take this one down too... What do they call people who create a system that enables cyber criminals to carry out their fraudulent activities? Simple: Partners in Crime,” David said.

“If DOH itself is unable to act on postings like these, what can private netizens like us do? What can NBI do?,” David added, referring to the National Bureau of Investigation.

GMA News Online has reached out to Facebook and Meta, which operates Facebook, for comment and will publish them as soon as it becomes available.
