DILG urges LGUs to enforce fireworks rules ahead of New Year

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Friday called on local government units (LGUs) to strictly implement regulations on fireworks in preparation for New Year’s Eve celebrations, aiming to minimize firecracker-related injuries.

“LGUs must restrict the use of firecrackers to community fireworks displays that have secured necessary permits and conduct public awareness campaigns on the dangers of prohibited fireworks,” the DILG stated.

The department also directed the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to ensure that designated fireworks display zones comply with Republic Act No. 9514, also known as the Fire Code of the Philippines.

Additionally, the Philippine National Police (PNP) was ordered to seize and destroy illegal firecrackers to curb their use.

The DILG further urged the public to avoid purchasing illegal or hazardous fireworks.

Instead, it recommended safer alternatives such as horns, recycled containers, pots, and other household items to create noise.

Several LGUs, including Quezon City and Caloocan City, have already established designated fireworks display zones for the December 31 celebrations.

As of December 27, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 101 firecracker-related injuries nationwide since December 22. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
