Firecrackers, fireworks caused 32 fire incidents in 2024 —BFP

A total of 32 fire incidents caused by firecrackers and fireworks have been reported since January this year, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said on Thursday.

Based on the data forwarded by BFP to GMA News Online, 16 of the fire incidents were caused by fireworks or pyrotechnics, while the remaining 15 were caused by firecrackers. A total of 20 fire incidents happened in January 2024.

Most of the fire incidents due to firecrackers and fireworks were reported in Calabarzon with eight cases, followed by Metro Manila and Western Visayas with five each, and Central Luzon with four.

Five people were killed while 24 were injured in the fire incidents.

The estimated total cost of damage was around P210,450,029, according to the BFP.

The latest fire incident due to firecracker and fireworks was reported in Barangay Zone 3 in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental on December 1, the BFP data showed.

People have started buying firecrackers and fireworks in Bocaue, Bulacan on Thursday ahead of the New Year 2025 revelries. Some of the buyers purchased firecrackers and fireworks in bulk.

The Bocaue Fire Station said that firecrackers stores have been compliant to regulations so far.

Meanwhile, the BFP responded to several fire incidents amid the celebration of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Data from GMA News Research showed that there had already been 756 fire incidents from December 1 to 25, which was 34.72% lower than the 1,158 incidents reported during the same period in 2023.

The top causes of the fire incidents were cooking, loose electrical connection, and smoking. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
