Firecracker-related injuries now at 43 — DOH
Eighteen new cases of firecracker-related injuries were recorded Wednesday, bringing the nationwide tally to 43 since December 22 as the country gears up to welcome the new year next week.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), the 18 cases logged on December 25 of this year is lower compared to the 28 cases recorded on the same day last year.
These firecracker-related injuries are being monitored in 62 sentinel hospitals nationwide, the DOH added.
Of the 43 patients, 34 are aged 19-years-old and below and nine are 20-years-old and above.
Further, 39 of the firecracker-related injury victims are male while four are female.
The DOH also said that 86% of the cases are caused by illegal firecrackers.
The Philippine National Police earlier reminded the public not to light firecrackers in residential areas in welcoming the year 2025. It also advised everyone to avoid prohibited firecrackers such as watusi, piccolo, and over 20 others.
The DOH advised the public to avoid using any fireworks to celebrate the holidays. Instead the public can use drums, horns, and other alternative noise makers.
Children are also prohibited from using firecrackers.
For emergencies, the public can call the National Emergency Hotline 911 or the DOH’s 1555. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
