Comelec accredits 7 political parties for BARMM polls
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has approved the accreditation of seven political parties to participate in the 2025 Bangsamoro Parliamentary elections.
Comelec Resolution No. 11090 named the accredited groups and approved the publishing of the certified list of regional parliamentary political groups with their nominees for the Bangsamoro polls. They are as follows:
- Bangsamoro Party
- Bangsamoro People’s Democratic Party
- BARMM Grand Coalition
- Mahardika Party
- Moro Ako Party
- Progresibong Bangsamoro Party
- United Bangsamoro Justice Party
In August, the Comelec extended the deadline for the accreditation of political parties and sectoral groups intending to participate in the 2025 Bangsamoro parliamentary elections to October 8, 2024.
This is the second time the deadline for the filing of manifestation of intent to participate (MIP) for the parliamentary polls was extended.
The Comelec promulgated Resolution 10984 or the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Bangsamoro Electoral Code (BEC).
Meanwhile, Comelec Resolution 10987 sets the activities related to the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the corresponding periods within which to comply.
In March 2023, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority passed the Bangsamoro Electoral Code, which will allow democratic participation in the local and regional elections. It would also open the creation of political parties in the region with representations from women, youth, indigenous people, settler communities, traditional leaders, and the Ulama.
The first-ever election in the Bangsamoro Region was scheduled to be conducted in May 2022 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
