PCG: BRP Gabriela Silang’s port visit strengthens PH-Indonesia ties
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday that the five-day port visit of the BRP Gabriela Silang to Indonesia bolstered maritime cooperation between Manila and Jakarta.
In a statement issued as the vessel returned to Manila, the PCG highlighted the successful exchange with Indonesian counterparts, noting that it reinforced maritime partnerships and emphasized the shared goals of peace, security, and sustainable development within the ASEAN community.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan underscored the agency’s commitment to enhancing maritime safety, security, and prosperity in the region through strategic partnerships.
“Behind this accomplishment lies the unwavering professionalism of the men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard, whose tireless efforts have made this mission a resounding success,” said Gavan, who also serves as the current chairperson of the ASEAN Coast Guard Forum.
He added that PCG personnel embody the core values of service, integrity, and honor, carrying out their missions both domestically and internationally.
Captain Lawrence Roque, commanding officer of the BRP Gabriela Silang, expressed gratitude to senior PCG officials for their guidance and trust, as well as to the vessel’s crew for their dedication and teamwork.
“Sa ating pagbabalik, dalhin natin ang mga aral na ating natutunan, ang mga ugnayang ating pinatatag, at ang patuloy na gabay ng Diyos sa ating misyon. Together, let us remain steadfast in ensuring peace and security in our seas,” Roque said.
The Philippines and Indonesia signed a boundary delimitation agreement in 2014, laying the groundwork for enhanced maritime cooperation.
The recent coordinated patrol marks the first collaborative activity between the two nations’ coast guards since President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. signed the Philippine Maritime Zones Act (Republic Act No. 12064).
To further strengthen regional maritime partnerships, Admiral Gavan revealed that the PCG was planning similar activities with other ASEAN neighbors, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
