Marcos to AFP: Remain steadfast, unyielding in your mission

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday reminded the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to remain unyielding in its mission of securing the country's defense against threats and challenges.

During the oath-taking ceremony of newly promoted generals and flag officers of the AFP, Marcos said the Philippine military has been the bedrock of the country's sovereignty, "a vital force that protects our land, our people, our freedoms."

"However, we continue to face complex and dynamic challenges—threats to our sovereignty, lawless elements that undermine peace, and the increasing frequency of natural disasters. These require us to remain steadfast, resourceful, unyielding in our resolve," Marcos said in his speech.

"As stewards of our national defense, you bear the solemn responsibility of ensuring the security of our land, of our seas, of our skies, our cyberspace," he added.

The President said that in defending the country's waters, "we must uphold international maritime laws, deepening our commitment to regional peace and cooperation."

"By fostering coordination amongst nations, we can safeguard stability while advancing our collective interests," Marcos said.

Diplomacy rooted in strong legal foundations is the most effective instrument in navigating these endeavors, according to Marcos.

The President's call to the military came hours after the China Coast Guard (CCG) rammed and launched water cannon attacks on a vessel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the vicinity of Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea.

It also comes on the heels of former President Rodrigo Duterte's call to the military to protect the Constitution amid what the latter called the "fractured governance in the Philippines."

Duterte also asked the military if it would continue to support Marcos if it knew he was a "drug addict."

Meanwhile, Marcos also called on military leaders to continue empowering the troops to serve the communities better.

"Train them to respond not only with skill but with empathy—ensuring that their actions reflect the highest ideals of public service," Marcos said.

"After all, the stars on your shoulders signify the responsibilities you now carry—the trust of the Filipino people, the security of our nation, and the future of generations yet to come," he added.

Marcos said his administration would remain steadfast in strengthening institutions and upholding the rule of law. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
