NDRRMC: 20 areas under state of calamity due to Nika, Ofel, Pepito

Twenty cities and municipalities in Luzon have declared a state of calamity in the aftermath of tropical cyclones Nika, Ofel, and Pepito, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday.

Based on NDRRMC’s 8 a.m. situational report, 11 areas in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) were placed under the state of calamity, followed by Cagayan Valley with eight, and Central Luzon with one.

Other effects

Nika, Ofel, and Pepito also affected 1.8 million people nationwide. Of them, 453,809 remained in evacuation centers, while 163,527 were staying elsewhere.

Twenty-five people were also reportedly injured due to the three tropical cyclones.

The cyclones also left a P469 million damage to infrastructure and P8.6 million damage to agriculture.

They also partially damaged 10,234 houses and totally damaged 1,525 houses across five regions.

Fifty roads and 24 bridges are also still not passable as of the moment.

Classes in 694 cities and municipalities were also disrupted and work in 442 cities and municipalities were suspended due to the storms.

The NDRRMC said that P54 million worth of assistance has been provided to affected families.

Seven people including an 8-year-old child were killed in a landslide in Ambaguio, Nueva Vizcaya amid the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Pepito.

Pepito exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 12 p.m. on Monday, according to state weather bureau PAGASA. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
