Comelec identifies 47 nuisance senatorial bets for Eleksyon 2025

Forty-seven individuals have been declared nuisance candidates in the 2025 senatorial polls by the Commission on Elections.

The poll body posted the list on its social media accounts.

The Comelec received 183 certificates of candidacy (COCs) last month.

It then released an initial list of 66 individuals whose names may be included in the official ballot.

The Comelec said this was "without prejudice to the decision of the Division or En Banc in the petitions to declare as nuisance candidates filed by the Law Department."

The commission also resolved "to confirm the authority of the Law Department to initiate on behalf of the Commission the motu proprio filing of petitions to declare as nuisance candidates against the named 117 aspirants.''

According to the Omnibus Election Code, the Comelec may declare an aspirant a nuisance candidate if the COC has been filed ''to put the election process in mockery or disrepute or to cause confusion among the voters by the similarity of the names of the registered candidates or by other circumstances or acts [that] clearly demonstrate that the candidate has no bona fide intention to run.''

Comelec Chairman George Garcia earlier said that they planned to resolve all nuisance candidate petitions by the end of November. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
