LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 partial opening this November —DOTR

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista on Thursday announced the partial opening of the first segment of LRT-1 Cavite Extension this month.

At a Palace press briefing, Bautista said this would open in the next two to three weeks. He ensured that the partial opening would be ''within the month of November.''

“We are here to announce the partial opening of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 Extension -- this is the Cavite Extension. We will open this line within the next maybe two to three weeks, this is within November,” Bautista said.

He said this was the first railway project that is to be completed under the Marcos administration.

The first phase will connect Baclaran Station in Pasay City to Dr. Santos Station in Parañaque City. The said extension is expected to reduce travel time by 30 minutes

Further, it is projected to serve an additional 80,000 passengers on a daily basis.

“We hope that this opening of the extension of Line 1 will help alleviate traffic as it will be able to support thousands of passengers, additional passengers taking LRT Line 1. And this will be our early Christmas gift to the residents of the area,” Bautista said.

Meanwhile, Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) General Manager Enrico Benipayo said Phase 1 will include five new stations.

“We are also very much excited to open the line. Again within this month, surely within the month of November we will be able to serve an extended area of the metropolis. Five additional stations, six kilometers, and this will allow people to traverse the alignment within a span of less than an hour,” Benipayo said.

Asked about possible free rides, Benipayo said ''For the moment, the intention—we don’t have any discussion yet to provide free rides at this point in time.''

''So, we’re focusing on making sure that the travel would be safe for the moment so we’re concentrating [on] more operational and safety matters. But, probably we’ll discuss that question with the good Secretary,'' he added.

In a separate interview with reporters, Bautista said the opening will be on November 16.
