Marcos cites significance of full respect to inter-parliamentary diplomacy in ASEAN

VIENTIANE - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. underscored the importance of full respect to inter-parliamentary diplomacy in order to achieve ASEAN Centrality.

''It is imperative that inter-parliamentary diplomacy be conducted with full respect for the Centrality of ASEAN, in line with our collective vision for the region,'' Marcos said during the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Wednesday afternoon.

''As the linchpin of our regional organization, we must uphold this principle in all our engagements as we chart our path for the future,'' he added.

The AIPA serves as the center of communication and information among member parliaments, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The objective is to significantly contribute through inter-parliamentary cooperation in the attainment of the goals and aspirations of the ASEAN region.

Marcos also highlighted ASEAN member states' partnership among their executive and legislative bodies, citing its significance in ensuring resilience amid emerging challenges.

''The partnership between the executive and legislative bodies of ASEAN is more integral than ever, for the challenges we face transcend national borders. Only through our concerted efforts to strengthen those ties that connect our ASEAN Members together can ensure our resilience in the face of emerging threats.'' he said

''We call for the enactment of responsive legislation, the development of innovative policies, and the provision of adequate resources and incentives that would advance ASEAN’s regional priorities,'' he added.

Marcos also emphasized AIPA’s efforts in translating the regional commitments to concrete actions at the national level, saying that this will be the key to building a peaceful and prosperous region.

Business council, youth interface

In the interface of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, Marcos said the Philippines heeds the call for ASEAN to take a leading role in shaping the regional global economy.

Marcos also expressed the Philippines' interest in the ASEAN-BAC’s request for relevant government agencies to participate in the Digital Transformation Center (DTC) Network Team.

''We believe that the involvement of relevant government bodies is instrumental in driving forward the objectives of the DTC Network Team, particularly in the Philippines. This collaboration ensures that our endeavors are in line with national priorities and policies, ultimately enhancing the success and sustainability of our initiatives,'' he said.

When it comes to the ASEAN leaders' interface with the youth, Marcos said the government continues to recognize the vital role of the youth in shaping the present and future of the region.

''With over 213 million young individuals across Southeast Asia, you are at the heart of ASEAN dynamism and creativity, serving as a bridge across our diverse Community,'' he said.

He urged the youth ''to resolutely forge ahead; to continue innovating, adapting, and connecting; to expand your vision without losing sight of your goals; to exercise judicious leadership – with our peoples at the center of our Community.''—AOL, GMA Integrated News
