Marcos touts Nat'l ID distribution before ASEAN business leaders

VIENTIANE - Despite the termination of the contract with the supplier of National ID cards, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. highlighted its distribution at the 2024 ASEAN Business and Investment Summit. 

Marcos is the keynote speaker at the business forum in Lao PDR. 

“We are also implementing and distributing now our digital National ID, which allows registered citizens easier access to financial, social protection, health, education,  and other government services,” Marcos said in his speech. 

Marcos said this as he cites the need to empower 1.5 million workers to engage in the global gig economy, equipping them with the skills to succeed in the digital age. 

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, in a decision dated August 15, cited several reasons for the termination such as “failure to deliver any or all of the goods specified in the contract, amounting to more than 10% of the contract price” and “failure to perform other obligations under the contract.”

AllCard Inc. (ACI), the company contracted by the BSP for printing the National ID cards, has appealed the termination of its contract, saying it has complied with its obligations.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
