NDRRMC: 5 reported dead due to Julian


Five people were reported dead during the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Julian

Five people were reported dead during the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Julian, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday.

In its report, the NDRRMC said four of the five fatalities were reported in Ilocos Region while the other one in Cagayan Valley.

Only two of the reported deaths have been confirmed, including a 65-year-old male in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte who died due to drowning and a 25-year-old male in Sta. Ana, Cagayan who died due to electrocution.

One person was also reported missing in Cordillera.

Meanwhile, eight people were reported injured in Cagayan Valley, according to the NDRRMC.

A total of 242,973 people or 69,290 families were affected by Julian in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and Cordillera. Most of the affected individuals were reported in Ilocos Region with 145,186.

Of the affected population, 117 people or 32 families were staying in evacuation centers while 461 people or 114 families were taking shelter in other places.

Damage

Damage to infrastructure worth P738,157,080 and to agriculture worth P309,168,211 were reported. Also, P1,540,000 worth of damage was reported in irrigation systems.

A total of 1,882 houses were damaged due to Julian — 1,680 partially and 202 totally.

Power outages, water supply problems, communication service issues, as well as impassable roads and bridges were reported in some affected areas.

Seven seaports in Ilocos Region and Calabarzon remained non-operational.

Due to this, 154 passengers, 15 rolling cargoes, nine vessels, and three motorbancas were stranded.

Classes in 320 areas and work schedules in 111 areas were suspended due to Julian’s threat.

State of calamity was declared in Ilocos Norte and Batanes.

Assistance worth P1,327,773 has been provided to the victims so far, according to the NDRRMC.

On September 27, the low pressure area east of Batanes developed into Tropical Depression Julian. Julian as a typhoon passed near Sabtang Island on September 30.

Julian intensified further into a super typhoon and exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on October 1.

Julian as a typhoon re-entered the PAR on Thursday and weakened further as a tropical depression on Friday.
