NDRRMC: 2 reported dead, 8 injured due to Julian

Two people were reported to have died while eight were injured due to the heavy rains and strong winds caused by Typhoon Julian, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.

In its 8 a.m. situational report, the NDRRMC said the reported fatalities were one individual from Region 1 (Ilocos Region) and one from the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

The eight injured persons were from Region 2 (Cagayan Valley). One person was also confirmed missing because of Julian.

A total of 58,953 families or 211,000 persons from Regions 1, 2 and CAR had been affected by the cyclone, of which 308 families or 922 persons were housed in 26 evacuation centers and 630 families or 2,249 persons staying in other areas.

Twenty one areas in Regions 1, 2 and CAR have experienced flooding, where five in Region 1 and seven in Region 2 have since subsided, while four in Region 2 are receding.

Two flooding incidents were reported in CAR.

A total of 105 road sections and three bridges were affected in the aforementioned regions, 72 of which are now passable.

Power was affected in 20 cities and municipalities in Regions 1 and 2, of which 14 (nine in Region 1, five in Region 2) had since been restored.

Water remained interrupted in two cities and municipalities in Region 2, while communication lines were affected in one area in Region 1, and seven in Region 2.

Six seaports in Calabarzon and one in Region 1 remained either non-operational or had their trips cancelled. Thus, 154 passengers, 15 rolling cargoes, nine vessels and three motorbancas in the region remained stranded.

The NDRRMC also reported a total of 363 damaged houses in Regions 1, 2 and CAR.

The NDRRMC cited the Department of Agriculture's report that 526.7 hectares of crops worth a total of P35,209,440.81 in Region 1 were damaged.

Meanwhile, the National Irrigation Administration reported that four infrastructures were damaged, costing a total of P1,540,000.

Classes were suspended in 320 cities and municipalities in Regions 1, 2, 3, CALABARZON and CAR, while work was suspended in 111 cities and municipalities in Regions 1, 2 and CAR.

A state of calamity was declared in 29 cities/municipalities in Regions 1 (23) and 2 (six).

A total of P21,588,275.13 worth of assistance was provided so far to 31,432 families out of 38,595 families needing assistance in Regions 1, 2 and CAR. In Region 1, food and non-food items worth P1,327,773.53 were provided.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 remained hoisted over Itbayat, Batanes, late Thursday morning as Typhoon Julian re-entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to state weather bureau PAGASA in its 11 a.m. bulletin. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
