Under the 1987 Constitution, a senator must be:

  1. a natural-born citizen of the Philippines
  2. at least thirty-five years of age on the day of the election
  3. able to read and write
  4. a registered voter; and
  5. a resident of the Philippines for not less than two years immediately preceding the day of the election.

The term of office for senators is six years. No senator, however, is allowed to serve for more than two consecutive terms.

The Constitution also provides that voluntary renunciation  of the office for any length of time "will not be considered as an interruption in the continuity of his service for the full term for which he was elected." — Llanesca T.
