Chel Diokno named 1st nominee of Akbayan partylist

Atty. Chel Diokno has been declared by Akbayan partylist as its first nominee for Eleksyon 2025. 

“It is an honor to represent Akbayan and push for its principles and buckle down on protecting the welfare of the Filipino people, upholding our democracy and holding the corrupt accountable,” Diokno said in a statement released on Saturday. 

Diokno was initially eyed by Akbayan, the political party of Senate minority leader Risa Hontiveros, to be part of its senatorial slate. 

“From the beginning, we carefully examined all possible avenues to best serve our people. After thorough reflection, we determined that running under the partylist system is not only a principled choice but also the most pragmatic path to effectively confront the forces of corruption and injustice,” explained Diokno. 

Diokno, however, emphasized that he and Akbayan will continue supporting opposition senatorial candidates, former Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino.

“Akbayan remains steadfast in backing Senators Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan. We fully support Senator Risa Hontiveros’ two Senate candidates, and as we campaign for them, we will also work to secure at least three seats for the party” Diokno said.

Meanwhile, current Representative Perci Cendaña will be Akbayan's second nominee. Cendaña is a former Commissioner for Luzon of the National Youth Commission. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
