PUP holds 1st F2F classes for PDLs in Manila City Jail

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Open University System held its first face-to-face classes for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) inside the Manila City Jail on Wednesday.

There are 72 persons deprived of liberty who are taking a degree in BS Business Administration major in Marketing Management.

“The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and determination as the PDL students embraced this unique opportunity to further their education. The initiative equips them with valuable knowledge and skills, instills hope, and empowers them to envision a brighter future beyond their current circumstances,” the PUP OUS said in a statement.

PUP said that it is planning to continue conducting more face-to-face classes inside the jail soon.

“This initiative is expected to profoundly impact these students' lives, enabling them to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society upon their release,” it added.

PUP and Manila City Jail inked an agreement last July to offer four bachelor programs for free to PDLs: Bachelor of Public Administration, BS Business Administration major in Marketing Management, and in Human Resource Management, and BS Entrepreneurship.

"This pioneering endeavor is a testament to the transformative power of education and its ability to break down barriers. By extending its reach to the Manila City Jail, PUP OUS is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable education system in the Philippines," the school said.—Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
