Dengue cases up by 25% in August, 36K infected — DOH

More than 36,000 people were infected with the dengue virus in the first half of August, while the number of fatalities this year due to the disease rose to 546, according to the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday.

Based on the DOH's latest data, the dengue uptrend persisted this rainy season as the 29,021 cases logged on July 21-August 3 jumped by 25% on August 4-17, with 36,335 cases.

All regions except Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bangsamoro showed an uptick in cases in the first two weeks of August.

Since the year started up to September 6, a total of 208,965 dengue cases were recorded—higher by 68% compared to the same period last year with 124,157 cases.

There were also 546 deaths reported so far in 2024 due to dengue. This translated to a case fatality rate of 0.26%, down from last year’s 0.39%.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said that lesser deaths may be due to improved health-seeking behaviors or case management.

“We are witnessing a continued and seasonal rise in dengue cases. It is crucial that we take immediate and concerted action to address this situation brought about by the rainy season. A smaller proportion of case deaths may be attributed to better health seeking behavior and also management at hospitals,” Herbosa said in a statement.

The DOH has been reminding the public to practice the 4S strategy against dengue: Search and destroy breeding places; Secure self-protection; Seek early consultation; and Support fogging or spraying in hot spot areas, especially during the rainy season. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
