Marcos: Wawa Dam project undergoing 'detailed engineering'

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Friday that the Wawa Dam project was undergoing detailed engineering to ensure that it would mitigate flood problems.

''The old Wawa Dam, the original one, is already too small for our purposes. Gagamitin pa rin pero maliit lang talaga (We will still use it but it is too small already). It won’t make — it won’t help us that much,'' Marcos said during a situational briefing in Antipolo City.

''That’s why, I am.... The Wawa Dam project has — even from the very start, hindi lang isa (it's not just one). They have — as the Secretary is saying, they have three more. Kailangan na natin siguro (We need to [do something]). We are undergoing detailed engineering already,'' he added.

Public Works and Highways chief Manuel Bonoan said the Wawa Dam project had a Phase 2 and Phase 3, noting the need to relocate three dams in the upper portion to catch the estimated 80 million cubic meters that have to be stored upstream.

''We’re now in the process of undertaking the preparation for the construction of three dams in the upper portion of the Upper Wawa Dam now, Mr. President,'' Bonoan told Marcos.

''And this is under preparations. Unfortunately, we have to do now the feasibility study again because the site of the original flood control dam was already under the Wawa Dam,'' he added.

Antipolo City was among the localities hit by Severe Tropical Storm Enteng.

Government data showed that around 8,036 families or 31,677 persons were affected by Enteng in Rizal province.

The inclement weather also damaged the Rizal Provincial Hospital system, with the damage valued at P533,700. — DVM/KG, GMA Integrated News
