Marcos moves Ninoy Aquino holiday to Aug. 23, 2024

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has ordered the non-working holiday in observance of Ninoy Aquino Day from Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, to Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.

In Proclamation No. 665, Marcos said the move was for a longer weekend that would promote domestic tourism. 

Moving the non-working day to mark of the martyrdom of former Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. from Aug. 21, Wednesday,  to Aug. 23, Friday meant a four-day weekend is in store for the public. The last Monday of August which falls on Aug. 26 is marked as the National Heroes' Day, a regular holiday.

“In order to provide for a longer weekend thereby promoting domestic tourism, the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day may be moved from 21 August 2024 (Wednesday) to 23 August 2024 (Friday), provided that the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day is maintained,” Marcos said in Proclamation No. 665.

Marcos instructed  the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to issue the appropriate circular to implement the proclamation for the private sector. —NB, GMA Integrated News
