Pro-Marcos Filipinos up in Q2, pro-Duterte down —OCTA survey

Filipinos who prefer to identify themselves as pro-Marcos have increased in the second quarter of the year while those who identify themselves as pro-Duterte have decreased, according to the latest survey by OCTA Research.

Released on Tuesday, OCTA's Tugon ng Masa (TNM) survey said pro-Marcos Filipinos increased to 36% in June 2024 from 31% in March, while pro-Duterte Filipinos decreased from 20% in March to 16% in June.

"On the other hand, 31% of adult Filipinos consider themselves independent or individuals who do not identify themselves as pro-Marcos, pro-Duterte, or the opposition," OCTA said.

"While still within the margin of error, a two percent increase was observed from the previous TNM survey conducted in the first quarter of 2024," it added.

Persons who identify themselves as supporters of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his administration were highest in the National Capital Region (NCR) with 43% and lowest in Mindanao with 25%.

Regions where at least 50% of adult Filipinos support Marcos include the Cordillera Administrative Region (83%), Ilocos Region (60%), Cagayan Valley (79%), MIMAROPA (69%), and Eastern Visayas (75%), the survey said. 

Meanwhile, support for the Dutertes, who hailed from Davao City, was highest in Mindanao at 50% and lowest in Balance Luzon with 5%. Regions with at least 50% pro-Duterte support include the Davao Region (70%), SOCCSKSARGEN (52%), and Caraga (67%). 

Among the members of the Duterte family currently holding government positions are Vice President Sara Duterte, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte. All are children of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Regarding locality, support Marcos is slightly higher in rural areas (37%) than in urban areas (35%), while pro-Duterte support is also marginally higher in rural areas (19%) than in urban areas (15%), OCTA said.

"Among socioeconomic classes, those adult Filipinos who identify themselves as Pro-Marcos are primarily supported by Classes ABC and D, with 40% and 37%, respectively. In Class E, 25% identify themselves as Pro-Marcos," OCTA said.

On the other hand, the OCTA survey showed that 33% of Class E support the Duterte family and their allies, followed by 16% of Class D and 4% of Class ABC.

As for age groups, the highest support for Marcos is from Filipinos aged 75 years old and above at 69%, with the lowest from those aged 25-34 at 29%.

The Duterte family, meanwhile, has the highest support from those aged 65-74 at 21% with the lowest from those aged 75 and above at 6%.

Data from the survey was gathered through face-to-face interviews of over 1,200 respondents nationwide from June 26 to July 1.

The survey had a ±3% margin of error at a 95% confidence level, and a ±6% regional margin of error at a 95% confidence level.  —Jiselle Anne Casucian/KBK, GMA Integrated News
