DepEd: Schools that haven't opened classes down to 673

A total of 673 schools in Luzon have yet to open classes for School Year 2024-2025, following the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Carina and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, data from the Department of Education (DepEd) showed Wednesday.

According to the Education Department, Central Luzon still logged the most schools (356) in which classes remained suspended. Next to it was the National Capital Region (NCR) with 171, Ilocos Region with 86, and Calabarzon with 60.

Despite this, Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that classes in 99% of schools nationwide are already ongoing.

“Nung Monday, may over 1,000 schools na tumigil dahil nadagdagan ‘yun ng mga local government cancellations eh no. So ngayon nasa 600 na lang yata,” he told reporters.

“I think that’s already 99% na ‘yung open. So, less than 1% ‘yung 600 na hindi pa nagbubukas,” he added.

As to enrollment figures, the DepEd’s latest monitoring report showed that a total of 22,440,747 students have already enrolled so far.

Of these enrollees, 19.6 million were in public schools; 2.5 million in private schools; 33,798 in state and local universities and colleges (SUCs/LUCs); and 245,520 in Alternative Learning System (ALS).

Calabarzon also recorded the most enrollees at 3.2 million, followed by Central Luzon with 2.36 million, and NCR with 2.33 million. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
