BI, CWC launch helpline vs. foreign sexual predators

BI, CWC launch helpline vs foreign sexual predators

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) and the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the opening of a hotline to report foreign sexual predators.

Under the MOU, the BI integrated the CWC’s Makabata Helpline 1383 into the bureau’s #ShieldKids campaign, which was designed to harmonize government actions against sex offenders.

The campaign also prioritizes cases involving foreign nationals and child trafficking and institutionalizes communication among agencies investigating and arresting pedophiles and traffickers.

"The threat against our children is real and imminent. With the reopening of our borders post-pandemic, we have seen a rise in attempts by sexual predators to enter the country. We must protect those who rely on us for their safety," said BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco during the signing.

"The partnership with the CWC’s Makabata Helpline is a significant step in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in our society. By defending our children, we safeguard our future," he said.

Tangsingco led the BI while Undersecretary Angelo Tapales signed the partnership on behalf of the CWC.

According to the BI, at least 171 foreign nationals previously convicted or wanted for sex crimes were barred from entering the country in 2023 alone.

The BI and the CWC urged the public to report foreign sexual predators to the Makabata Helpline 1383 or the B Commissioner’s helpline at Facebook.com/immigration.helpline.ph.—Sundy Locus/LDF, GMA Integrated News
