Deaths in Luzon due to Habagat, Carina rise to 34 — PNP

The number of reported fatalities in Luzon due to the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Carina and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat has increased to 34, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Their deaths were attributed to drowning with 22 cases, followed by a landslide with six, electrocution with five, and one due to a fallen tree.

In a press briefing, PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo said that 18 individuals were reported injured in the aftermath of the heavy downpours, but this was still subject for validation.

She added that six were also reported missing in several areas.

In Calabarzon, the Police Region Office 4A said 12 people were reported dead, including five in Batangas, four in Rizal, and three in Cavite.

Two people were missing in Cavite and Rizal, where while six others were injured.

In Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office said 11 people were reported dead including three each in Manila and Quezon City, as well as one each in Malabon, Valenzuela, San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Pasay.

Eight people were also reported injured in Quezon City.

Meanwhile in Central Luzon, the Police Regional Office 3 said nine people were reported dead, including six in Bulacan and three in Pampanga.

Two people were missing in Bataan and Zambales. Three others were injured, including two in Bataan and one in Pampanga.

The latest PNP data also showed that two people died in Bicol. One death and two missing individuals were reported in Ilocos Region.

NDRRMC figures

In its 8 a.m. report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 14 people were reported dead in Luzon and Mindanao due to the Habagat and Tropical Cyclones Butchoy and Carina.

The council's tally of total fatalities has not changed since Thursday.

Eight people were confirmed dead including four in Zamboanga and one each in Northern Mindanao, Davao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Metro Manila.

The NDRRMC has been validating the reports on five fatalities in Calabarzon and one in Bangsamoro.

1.3 million affected

Habagat, Carina, and Butchoy affected a total of 1,319,467 people or 299,344 families in all regions in the country except in Eastern Visayas, the NDRRMC's updated report showed.

Of the affected population, 211,396 people or 53,414 families were staying in evacuation centers, while 675,932 individuals or 114,735 families were taking shelter in other places.

A total of 317 houses were damaged—240 partially and 77 totally—due to the weather disturbances.

Damage to agriculture worth P9,706,852 and to irrigation facilities worth P6,560,000 were reported. For infrastructure, the reported damage was P1,298,974.

A state of calamity was declared in Pinamalayan and Baco in Oriental Mindoro; San Andres in Romblon; Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental; Kabacan and Pikit in Cotabato.

Also, Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. on Thursday said Bataan, Bulacan, Cavite, and Batangas declared a state of calamity.

Earlier, Metro Manila was placed under a state of calamity.
