NDRRMC: Reported death toll due to Habagat, Carina, Butchoy now 14

The number of fatalities due to the impact of Southwest Monsoon or Habagat as well as Tropical Cyclones Carina and Butchoy rose to 14, the  National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Thursday.

Based on NDRRMC’s 8 a.m. report, eight people were confirmed dead including four in Zamboanga and one each in Northern Mindanao, Davao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and Metro Manila.

The NDRRMC is still validating the reports on five fatalities in Calabarzon and one in Bangsamoro.

Four of the victims died due to trauma or suffocation by entrapment following landslide incidents in two sitios in Barangay Pamucutan, Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile a cadaver, who was from Maramag, Bukidnon, was found and retrieved from the Pulangi River in Kabacan, North Cotabato.

The person who was previously reported injured in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental after crossing a river with strong current also turned out to be a fatality, according to the NDRRMC.

Meanwhile, two fatalities reported in Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur and Quezon City in Metro Manila died due to drowning.

The cases of death of other fatalities are not indicated in NDRRMC’s report.

Meanwhile, two people were reported missing in Calabarzon and Northern Mindanao, and two were also reported injured in Northern Mindanao.

1M affected

Habagat, Carina, and Butchoy affected a total of 1,115,272 people or 245,298 families in all regions in the country except in Eastern Visayas, according to the same NDRRMC report.

Of the affected population, 51,726 people or 12,199 families were staying in evacuation centers while 578,158 individuals or 116,878 families were taking shelter in other places.

NDRRMC spokesperson Edgar Posadas said the most affected are the low-lying areas including Malabon, Navotas, and Marikina.

“Sa Metro Manila, halos lahat po e. Wala pong itulak, walang ikabig lalo na doon sa low-lying areas kahapon. Yun pong mga request natin kahapon for para po sa mga tulong para po mailikas ay halos po galing sa iba't ibang lugar sa Metro Manila,” he said.

(In Metro Manila, almost all areas, especially in low-lying areas yesterday. The requests for rescue yesterday mostly came from different places in Metro Manila.)

“Pero po yung mga lugar po ng Malabon, Navotas, yung mga low-lying areas po and of course special po itong sa lugar ng Marikina kahapon,” he added.

(But the most affected are the areas of Malabon, Navotas, the low-lying areas, and of course Marikina.)

A total of 292 houses were damaged — 216 partially and 76 totally — due to the inclement weather.

Damage to agriculture worth 9,706,852 and to irrigation facilities worth P6,560,000 were reported. For infrastructure, the reported damage was P793,551.

Only one of the 17 canceled domestic flights have resumed so far. Also, one international flight remained canceled.

Of the 20 affected seaports, only two resumed operations. Due to this, 246 passengers, 19 rolling cargoes, nine vessels, and five motorbancas were stranded.

Classes were suspended in 288 areas and work schedules in 206 areas.

State of calamity was declared in Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro, Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental, Kabacan and Pikit in Cotabato, as well as in the entire Metro Manila.

Assistance worth P32,913,625 has been provided to the victims so far, according to the NDRRMC. —KBK/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
