Carina, Habagat wallop livelihoods, roads, houses


The effects of Tropical Cyclone Carina and the southwest monsoon or Habagat continued to be felt Wednesday as livelihoods, homes, and transportation were disrupted in different parts of the country.

Floods, swollen rivers, landslides, and soil erosion, among others were reported in multiple areas due to the weather disturbances, according to reports of GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita on Wednesday.

In Quezon City, many roads became impassable to motorists due to floods, which rose up to six feet in some areas, based on the report of James Agustin. Only a few big trucks were able to cross the submerged roads.

Affected roads included Araneta Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Banawe Street corner N.S. Amoranto Avenue, Don Jose Street, Sto. Domingo Avenue, and Don Manuel Agregado Street, among others.

Worker Reggie Llarenas was unable to report for work as his motorcycle could not pass the flooded areas.

"Babalik na lang ho ako siguro kasi malalim na po 'yung tubig diyan eh. Magte-text na lang po ako sa amo ko na hindi ako makakapasok," he said.

(I'll just go back because the water is already deep. I'll just text my boss that I cannot come to work.)

In Pasay City, vendors at the Libertad Market tried to save their products from getting swept away by the floods, according to a report of Bea Pinlac. Some retail items were seen floating around the market.

Many vehicles including a jeepney with passengers broke down in the middle of a flood.

Up to leg-deep floods were reported in the areas of Cartimar and Pasay Rotonda.

Meanwhile, motorists were also advised of floods in the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX)-Magallanes  southbound area in Makati City.

Other regions

In Pangasinan, over 5,000 bangus or milkfish died and floated in some ponds amid the heavy rains in Mangaldan town causing hundreds of thousand pesos of losses to fishpond owners.

The fish kill was due to the low level of dissolved oxygen in the water caused by the changing weather, according to the municipal agriculture office.

In Benguet, a strawberry farm in La Trinidad was damaged by flooding. Due to this, the supply of strawberries for the next month was expected to be affected. Floods also hit some homes in the town.

Several landslide incidents were also reported in Tuba.

In Baguio City, a river swelled and reached some roads.

Parts of Kennon Road were closed after a rockslide. The falling debris also damaged some vehicles passing the road.

In Cagayan, the Bagunot Bridge in Baggao was blocked after the Pared River overflowed, based on the report of GMA Regional TV Jasmine Garbiel-Galban. Some residents used boats to cross the flood.

Mongo bean crops, which were set to be harvested at the end of the month, were damaged by flood.

"Wala na dahil hindi pa hinog yan. Sayang talaga," farmer Renante de Leon said.

Libertad National High School in Abulug was affected by flooding. Floods were reported in Gonzaga and Sta. Ana towns.

A no fishing and sailing policy was imposed in Cagayan in light of the bad weather.

A total of around 500 people have evacuated in Cagayan due to floods in some barangays in seven towns.

In Ilocos Norte, soil erosion displaced 16 people or five families in Banay town. The same number of evacuees were also reported in Laoag City.

Meanwhile in Ilocos Sur, soil erosion also drove seven individuals or two families away from their homes.

In Bulacan, nearly 100 families were forced to evacuate as shoulder-deep floods hit Sitio Libis in Barangay Taliptip, Bulacan. Evacuees stayed in a school and a covered court.

The barangay government has coordinated with Meralco in light of the possible electrical hazards amid the flooding in the area.

In Batangas, some floating cottages in Matabungkay Beach in Lian town collapsed due to the big waves, according to a report of GMA Regional TV Paul Hernandez.

A boat in Batangas City was also damaged by the big waves.

Alvin Como, a fisherman, called for assistance for their sector so they can recover from the impact of the bad weather on their livelihood.

"Kapag may bagyo, Habagat, ang mga mandaragat po ay hindi makapalaot. Ang dapat ay tulungan na lamang ang mga mangingisda," he said.

(When there is a storm or Habagat, sailors cannot go out to sea. Fishermen should be given assistance.)

The wall of a house in the area was destroyed due to the strong winds.

In Occidental Mindoro, five barangays were flooded in Sablayan town after the Amnay River and Patrick River swelled due to the continuous rains. Over 1,300 people have been evacuated.

"Nagkataon lang kasi ngayon na high tide, di ba? 'Yung ibang bayan din, ibang barangay umapaw din ng kaunti kasi kataasan ng high tide. Nu'ng bumaba yung high tide, nag-subside din ang baha," Occidental Mindoro Governor Eduardo Gadiano said.

(It just so happened that it's high tide, right? Some towns and barangays were slightly flooded because of this. When the high tide was over, the floods subsided.)

In Oriental Mindoro, the water in Paggalan, Bucayao, and Alag rivers hit their critical level.

A road in Barangay Parang in Calapan City became impassable and residents have evacuated due to the floods.
