PNP Chief Marbil warns of ‘zero tolerance’ vs erring cops

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil on Sunday warned that police officers who were engaged in misconduct and abuse would be penalized under the “zero-tolerance” policy.

“We have no room for erring officers in our ranks. The PNP is fully dedicated to upholding the law and ensuring that every police officer adheres to the strictest code of conduct. Misconduct and abuse will be met with the full force of our internal disciplinary mechanisms,” Marbil said in a statement.

Earlier this week, two members of the  Manila Police District faced a criminal complaint after they allegedly punched and threatened a Valenzuela traffic enforcer over a stare.

The two policemen were riding motorcycles without a helmet. One of them drew a gun and used it to punch the traffic aid in the stomach.

Authorities also arrested a police officer for allegedly firing a gun while he was drinking with his neighbors in  Tondo, Manila.

“The time for complacency is over,” Marbil said. “We will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our ranks,”

The PNP Chief also vowed “swift and stringent” punishments on police officers involved in misconduct under the PNP’s internal disciplinary mechanism.

Citing the PNP Internal Affairs Service, Marbil revealed that charges were filed against 6,256 personnel from July 2022  to July 2024, with around 2,550 facing administrative penalties ranging from reprimand to dismissal.

The PNP Chief added that 572 personnel were recommended for dismissal due to various infractions.

To further promote transparency and accountability, Marbil said the PNP was also investing in new technologies such as artificial intelligence-powered body cameras.

He added that police visibility would be increased, response times would be improved, and there would be closer collaboration with the Justice Department to ensure fair prosecution.

Marbil urged the public to report police misconduct and involvement in illegal activities to create a safer and more secure environment for every  Filipino. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
