DFA investigating reports of email data being sold online

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is looking into reports indicating that its email data may have been compromised.

This developed as the cybersecurity advocacy group Deep Web Konek reported an alleged data breach at the DFA.

The group said a threat actor, identified as “chengyi,” posted on a dark web forum offering Philippine Ministry of Foreign Affairs emails for sale.

“The DFA has received reports of alleged email data being sold online. The Department’s Information and Communications Technology Division is investigating the matter,” DFA Spokesperson Teresita Daza said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

On Facebook, the group said sensitive email data from DFA were allegedly being sold online. The post reportedly included a sample download link and contact information.

“The said breach happened sometime in June 2024 as per the threat actor. This alarming development suggests ongoing access to the DFA’s email systems,” Deep Web Konek said.
