Lagman: Former VP Robredo to run for Naga mayor in 2025

Former Vice President Leni Robredo will run for Naga City mayor in the 2025 polls, Liberal Party (LP) president and Albay Representative Edcel Lagman said Thursday.

“Ang last namin na pag-uusap ay siya (Robredo) ay tatakbo as mayor ng Naga City upang ipagpatuloy ang programa ng kanyang late husband,” Lagman said in a virtual press conference.

(In our last conversation, it was mentioned that she is running for mayor in Naga City to continue the programs of her late husband.)

Robredo, who finished a far second in the 2022 polls, is the widow of the late Interior and Local Government secretary and longtime Naga mayor Jesse Robredo.

The late Robredo won the 2000 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Good Governance for steering Naga City to prosperity anchored on people’s participation in formulating government policies.

Lagman also said the former vice president will campaign for the Senate slate of LP and allied parties for the 2025 polls.

“Siya naman ay sasama sa national campaign para sa senatorial slate ng LP at ang mga kaalyansa ng LP,” Lagman added.

(She will join the national campaign for the senatorial slate of LP and our allies.)

Lagman, however, did not drop the names of individuals that the LP and their allies are considering to field in the 2025 polls.

A separate source close to Robredo also told GMA News Online that the former vice president has already changed her residence back to Naga City from Magarao, Camarines Sur.

As an independent component city, Naga City is under the Camarines Sur province only by geography and not by political jurisdiction. As such, Naga City residents do not vote for Camarines Sur provincial government officials.

GMA News Online sought Robredo for comment and will publish her reply as soon as it becomes available.
