Retiree finds 4 GSIS loans she claims she never applied for

A retired government employee found four loans in her Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) account without her knowledge.

According to a 24 Oras report by Emil Sumangil on Wednesday, complainant Lourdes Mendoza said that she only originally took out two loans, but was surprised that her records claimed she allegedly applied and was approved for four other loads before her retirement in September 2020.

Her records also show that she received the money in the loans she allegedly made.

“Nag-loan lang po ako ng dalawa, salary at tsaka policy. Nagtaka po ako bakit ang dami pong loan na nakalagay doon, eh hindi ko po kayang bayaran 'yan,” said Lourdes.

(I only took out two loans, salary and policy. I was confused as to why there were so many loans listed there, I won’t be able to pay them all.)

“Dalawa lang po talaga 'yun. Umiyak po ako noon sa loob ng GSIS kasi sa totoo po, hindi ko po talaga inutang iyon,” she added.

(I really only took out two loans. I cried at the GSIS office because to be honest, I really didn’t apply for those other loans.)

Based on her GSIS records, Lourdes allegedly took out loans for emergency loan assistance, regular policy loan, member’s cash advance, educational assistance loan, summer one month salary loan and enhanced salary loan from 2003 to 2012.

The additional records brought her total loans from almost P10,000 to almost P30,000, excluding interest and penalties.

Meanwhile, the GSIS said that they would be investigating the issue but invited Lourdes to check and review her records.

“We invite the member to visit us at her convenience so we can provide her with a detailed review of her loan records. This includes all pertinent documents, checks released and bank statements. Our aim is to ensure transparency and address any concerns she may have,” GSIS said in a statement.

The institution said it is also looking into possibly adjusting computed interests and surcharges on Lourdes; loans, and assured that any changes found will be refunded back to her.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF. GMA Integrated News
