Kanlaon Volcano's history of eruptions

After almost seven years of relative inactivity, Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental emitted plumes as high as 5,000 meters on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS said the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon began at 6:51 p.m. with the volcano sending a vertical plume into the atmosphere.

The eruption lasted 6 minutes and was followed by a relatively strong volcanic-tectonic earthquake.

PHIVOLCS recorded two volcanic earthquakes following the eruption.

Since 1866, all of Kanlaon's eruptions, except one, were phreatic in nature. 

According to the United States Geological Survey, a phreatic eruption is made up of "steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by volcanic activity. The water, once heated, begins to boil or can even flash straight to steam, causing an explosion." 

In 1902, Kanlaon had a strombolian eruption, which is a "moderately explosive eruption of basaltic magma with moderate gas content," the National Parks Service said.
