Makati mayor Abby Binay joins Nationalist People's Coalition

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay has joined the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Rizal lawmaker and party stalwart Jack Duavit confirmed to GMA News Online Tuesday.

In a separate X post of Super Radyo dzBB, Binay was seen taking her oath before NPC members, including Duavit, her husband and Makati lawmaker Luis Campos, and Presidential Legislative Liaison Office head Mark Leandro Mendoza.

“Mayor Abby Binay is a highly respected and multi-awarded chief executive. We must not forget that she is also a veteran legislator having served as one of the Representatives of the City of Makati,” Duavit told GMA News Online.

“She brings experience, energy, and vision [to the party],” Duavit added.

The party is eyeing Binay as one of its candidates in the 2025 senatorial elections.

In a statement, Binay thanked the NPC leadership and her partymates for their ''trust and confidence.''

''The midterm election is still a year away. For now, I will continue to fulfill my pledge to my beloved Makatizens to continue making our services better and promote our city as a major tourist and investor destination,” she said.

“The issues facing our country should be seen as a chance to work together and find common purpose rather than opportunities to sow division,” she added.

On May 18, the Marcos-led Partido Federal ng Pilipinas inked an alliance agreement with NPC.

NPC has around 4,000 members, including 1,910 incumbent public officials.

The party also holds five seats in the Senate and 38 in the House of Representatives.

Binay is in her third and last term as Makati mayor.

Her sister, Nancy, is in her second and last term as senator.

Nancy has expressed her intention to run for Makati mayor in the 2025 elections, but she said she will have to talk with her sister Abby first.

Nancy did not support Abby during the latter’s 2019 Makati mayoral bid.

Instead, Nancy supported the mayoral bid of their brother and former Makati mayor, Junjun Binay. Abby defeated Junjun by over 80,000 votes.

In the 2022 polls, Abby ran for mayor under the Makatizens United Party. — with Ted Cordero/LDF/VBL, GMA Integrated News
